In September 2001, Aaron Berhane made the heart-wrenching decision to escape Eritrea.
He left behind his wife and young children, as well as his prestigious job as editor-in-chief of the country’s largest circulation newspaper, Setit. It was his work that left Aaron with no option but to flee the country.
In 2001 his newspaper printed an open letter criticising the government signed by senior officials.
Aaron’s life was immediately put in danger.
He managed to escape and secured political asylum in Canada.
Aaron did not see his family again for eight years until their emotional reunion last month.
He told Matthew Bannister about his precarious getaway from Eritrea and how he feels to finally be with his beloved family again.
