Justice Prevails as UN Human Rights Council Renews the Special Rapporteur’s Mandate on Eritrea and Rejects Repressive Resolution

London, 4 July 2025 — In a landmark decision today at the United Nations Human Rights Council, the international community reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and human rights in Eritrea by adopting the resolution sponsored by the EU (A/HRC/59/L.7) to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the country. A counter-resolution (L.1/Rev.1) led by Eritrea aimed at dismantling the mandate and deflecting scrutiny was firmly rejected.

The renewed mandate ensures continued international monitoring and reporting on the grave and systematic human rights violations taking place in Eritrea, including indefinite national service, arbitrary detention, and transnational repression.

“Today, justice triumphed over tyranny. The international community stood firm for human rights and accountability by renewing the Special Rapporteur’s mandate and rejecting Eritrea’s attempts to silence the truth,” said Elizabeth Chyrum, Director of Human Right Concern – Eritrea (HRCE).

The resolution’s passage comes at a critical time, as survivors and advocates continue to highlight widespread abuses under the Eritrean government’s decades-long authoritarian rule. The Human Rights Council’s action sends a strong message: impunity will not be tolerated.

We commend all member states and civil society allies who stood with the victims of human rights abuses and upheld the principles of international law and justice.
