(Awate.com, Saleh Younis, Jan 6, 2016) Observing the government of Eritrea and its functionaries, one is always struck which one of their two wings is heavier: the malicious one or the stupid one? One can build a case for either one, and it is a running debate among the Eritrean opposition and the silent majority. In an article that appeared at madote.com under the heading of “United Nation Commission of inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea will face inevitable legal challenges”, a Yemane Tsegay who is an “M.S. Aerospace Engineer/Legal Advocacy” is attempting to make his case to support the heading of the article… What struck me is the photo that madote.com, Tesfanews’ poor sister, chose to accompany the article.  A photo that was originally published by awate.  Choosing the picture conclusively shows that the stupid wing is heavier than the malicious wing.

Human Rights Concern – Eritrea, condemns the brutal handling of the African asylum-seekers by the Israel Police on Sunday 29 June 2014.

On Friday 27 June, the asylum seekers walked out of Holot detention center in protest of their illegal detention and headed towards the Egyptian border, aiming to cross the border to Egypt and hoping to seek help from the UNHCR. Unfortunately, they were blocked from crossing and finally decided to settle in Nitzana forest, about three hundred meters distance from the border.

ERITREA FOR SALE – TO THE RUSSIANS!

eritrea_russia_diplomatsThe Eritrean government has become so isolated and desperate that it has tried to sell its precious gold resources to Russia – at any price. Sanctions have hurt the financial position of this government so much that the only way they could try to get support was to surreptitiously, and unannounced, send government representatives to Moscow, Russia in late 2012, to offer the Russian government the rich gold and base metal deposits in Mogoribe. Just two weeks from now, 22 February, is the third anniversary of a raid on Radio Bana in central Asmara in which about 50 journalists were arrested. Most were released but at least 11 are still held and are in solitary confinement. Reporters Without Borders continues to campaign for them and other journalists who are imprisoned in Eritrea, some since September 2001.

Still Waiting for Sanctions on Eritrea for Human Rights Abuses

Still Waiting for Sanctions on Eritrea for Human Rights Abuses

As we celebrate International Human Rights Day, we welcome the Security Council Sanctions on Eritrea as a means of bringing to light some of the human rights abuses being perpetrated every day on Eritreans in Eritrea and in some of the countries they flee to, but we would welcome a more human-rights based approach focussing on the internal terrorism inflicted on the Eritrean people.
